Why was Black Medicine Collective Started?
Black Medicine Collective was not created from an idea alone—it was born from lived experience, love, and loss.
Before it became a platform, it was a promise.
As a daughter, I had the honor of walking alongside my mother, Christene, during one of the most difficult seasons of her life as she battled cancer. In those moments, I saw firsthand how overwhelming the medical world can be. The language, the decisions, the uncertainty—it all moves fast, and often without the clarity or support families truly need.
Even with strength, faith, and determination, there were times when we needed more information, more understanding, and more guidance. I began to realize how critical it is—not just to receive care—but to understand it.
I saw how access to clear, culturally relevant medical information could make a difference in how people respond, advocate, and navigate their health journeys.
My mother was my greatest supporter. She believed in me, in my voice, and in my purpose. Even during her fight, she continued to pour into me, reminding me to stay focused and to keep going. She made me promise not to delay my goals—to move with intention and not wait.
After her transition, that promise became something deeper.
It became a purpose.
Black Medicine Collective was created to ensure that no one feels lost when it comes to their health. It is a platform dedicated to bridging the gap between medical professionals and the communities they serve—providing clear, compassionate, and potentially life-saving knowledge.
This work is about more than information. It is about empowerment. It is about advocacy. It is about making sure individuals and families feel seen, heard, and equipped to make informed decisions about their health.
It is also a continuation of my mother’s legacy.
Every conversation, every interview, and every piece of content created through Black Medicine Collective is rooted in love—the same love that carried me through one of the hardest times in my life.
This is for her.
This is for the community.
This is for every life that can be impacted by knowledge.
Sincerely, Dr. Shirelle Lewis
