Meet Dr. Shirelle Lewis

Founder, Black Medicine Collective

Rooted in Purpose. Led by Experience. Driven by Impact.

Shirelle Lewis is a proud Texas native, dedicated social worker, and visionary leader committed to transforming the healthcare experience for Black communities. As the Founder of Black Medicine Collective, her work centers on bridging the gap between patients and providers while addressing the systemic inequities that continue to impact health outcomes.

With a Doctor of Social Work (DSW), Shirelle brings over a decade of experience working with high-risk and vulnerable populations. Her professional background includes case management, advocacy, and direct service—equipping her with the expertise to navigate complex systems and support individuals during some of their most critical moments.

Her academic foundation, combined with her lived experiences, has shaped her into a compassionate and informed advocate for change.

A Calling, Not a Career

Social work did not simply become Shirelle’s profession—it found her.

Growing up in an underserved community, she experienced firsthand what it meant to navigate life with limited resources and opportunities. Those early experiences shaped her perspective and ignited a lifelong commitment to helping others.

Her purpose has always been clear:
to ensure that no one has to experience the same barriers, confusion, or lack of support that her family once faced.

A Mission Born from Lived Experience

Shirelle’s work is not only professional—it is deeply personal.

While caring for her mother during her battle with cancer, she witnessed firsthand the challenges many Black patients face: being unheard, dismissed, and forced to advocate for basic care.

There was a moment during that journey when everything became overwhelming—too much information, not enough understanding, and fear taking over. It was in that moment that Shirelle realized how difficult it is for patients and families to navigate the healthcare system alone.

Everything changed when they were introduced to nurse navigators—individuals who helped bridge the gap, provided clarity, and ensured her mother’s needs were truly being met.

That experience revealed what was missing in healthcare—and what was possible when patients are properly supported.

Together, Shirelle and her mother used their voices to raise awareness—participating in multiple news interviews and helping healthcare institutions, including Seton, better understand the patient experience. Through their advocacy and storytelling, they contributed to efforts that helped raise over $600,000 to support healthcare initiatives.

That journey became the foundation for Black Medicine Collective.
